R.B. Meiser 909 Highlander Switch Rods
Our original switch rods were 9'9" two handed rods. I have been building these short two handed rods by personal request for our anglers for over 30 years. We are now introducing them into our general inventory.
The flex and power ratings of the 909 rods are far different then typical single hand fly rods. They are short two handed rods that are designed specifically to eliminate the physical burden of the single hand double haul delivery … And especially to aide anglers in repetitious search casting with extreme shooting heads and big bugs.
Most anglers will use them as boat rods. They have great advantages in this application as they are short enough to be used as levering tools to manage explosive fish at the gunnels, and powerful enough to turn large fish on burst speed runs.
These are ideal rods for large game fish that will only begin an explosive battle at the first sight of the boat like Muskie or Monster Pike. Or for stopping an aggressive burst speed run of a Giant Trevally before they reach jagged coral heads.
The 909 Highlanders do weigh the same as most comparable length single hand fly rods, and can certainly be utilized with traditional single hand delivery, but they are primarily (and most logically) used as two handed over head rods. Line systems for them will be advanced grain weight forward shooting heads with grain distribution within their tapers suitable for two handed overhead deliveries.
The most efficient casting technique used to maximize delivery distances will be to utilize minimal expended energy with the majority of power sourced from the low hand. The delivery will only need to utilize a very economic 2 to 10 O'clock two handed over head stroke, with a high crisp stop at 2 O'clock. High hand power needs to be minimized in the delivery formula, with the upper grip only cradled in an open palmed high hand. The high hand is not used to drive power into the shot; in fact quite the opposite is true. The high hand is used primarily for three purposes: 1. To assist in moving the rod tip in the direction of the shot. 2. To Stop the forward stroke at the shot. 3. To prevent the rod from falling into the water !
If correct low hand power delivery techniques are followed, the caster will only need the most minimal amount of expended energy to deliver shooting heads with major bugs in tow to consistently reach distances in excess of 90' <> All with only the most minimal physical burden to the casters arms, wrists and shoulders.
This was the original intent of our early switch rods, and how the 909 rods are still best utilized.
The lines best utilized for the 909 rods will be grain matched shooting heads that will generally be of a head length not to exceed 30'. We do offer custom made shooting heads for the 909 rods suitable for fresh water plus both cold and tropical salt water applications.
