The System-10 Switch Rod is the work horse of the series. You may never find a fly rod in this weight class that will efficiently perform as many applications as will this rod. This is hands down, the most popular rod within the Switch Rod series.
One of the major advantages of the Switch Rod family in general, is that all of these rods are often able to present line and apply technique as well as the longer, and heavier two-handed rod. This is especially true in the smaller to mid-size rivers, where extreme distance Spey style presentation is not required. Upon re-entering fresh water, spawning Steelhead, especially Summer fish, quickly regain their old "Trout" habits. They will hold in water that will be safe from predators, and convenient to their feeding habits. Swinging a fly through waters that are very similar to prime Trout holding water will often be your best for locating Summer Steelhead. The best holding water will often be easily reached while presenting minimal distance casts. Many runs are best fished by starting with the water at your feet. Once these close-in waters have been saturated, systematically swing through the longer reach holding water. There is simply nothing more inefficient then to spook close-in fish with a poorly timed (albeit beautifully performed) big Spey rod, cross-stream presentation! The System 10 will allow you to present close in, as well as it presents distance. If confined by tight riparian, or steep tight banks, a Spey style cast can easily present the fly. Most importantly, this rod will allow the extremely efficient side-step, single Spey, then swing, saturated coverage of prime holding waters. If need be, two-handed or single hand overhead presentations can also be utilized.
This rod has proven to be excellent over shallow salt waters, either from the surf, flats, or skiff. Permit, Bones, Stripers, Snook, Reds, Blues are all easily fished to with these rods. Long reach two handed overhead presentations to a wide variety of freshwater game fish are easily accomplished. Salmon, Summer and Winter Steelhead, Pike, River and Lake Muskies, Lakers, and big bug Bass are all fair game with this rod. This rod is suitable for all game fish to 40 pounds.
Over the past seasons, several Summer Steelies in the 25+ pound range were landed and released from the Dean, Bulkley, and Skeena with our Switch Rods. Paul Miller of Ashland, Or. landed and released a Skeena Summer Steelhead in 2004 that measured 24" on the girth, 44" in length, and weighted aprox. 39 pounds.
This is an extremely efficient fly rod, designed to meet the diverse mid-weight range requirements of today's angler for both salt and fresh water applications. Simply put, this rod is capable of effectively pursuing all game fish to 40 pounds. Whatever your requirements may be, you will find that this rod, when balanced with the appropriate line systems, will consistently perform beyond your current expectations of any conventional 9/10 wt. fly rod.
